How can we build a new habit?
This is a question that many people may have thought at least once in the lifetime. All of us have both good and bad habits. Waking up early and study English would be one of the good habits whereas staying up late at night and enjoy playing video games every day cannot be considered as a good one. As we are given the same amount of time equally, it is ideal if we can establish good lifestyles by having beneficial habits.

Difficulties in maintaining a new habit.

A new habit cannot be built in a day. It has been said that nearly 2 months on average of engagement is worthwhile to make a new habit. Once we acquired it, the new behaviour would be automatically shown without our consciousness. In order to obtain the habit, it is crucial to keep doing it by setting a goal such as becoming fluent in English and stop playing video games at late night. However, even if we set up a target goal, keeping our motivation for 2 months is something not easy for us to do.

Is writing a Medium diary my habit?

In my case, I started writing this medium English diary in January 2021. Although this is the 13th article, I am not confident enough to say that I acquired writing the Medium articles as a part of my habits. It’s because I still feel awkward to start writing articles every time when open the Medium app. However, I am still motivated to continue this project at my comfortable pace. Why? It’s because of the three reasons below.

Firstly, I am passionate to improve my writing skills in English. In fact, this is the main purpose of starting this medium diary. Up until today, I have already felt a slight English improvement in myself. The more I create articles, the more I feel easier to structure the English articles; which is the fact that makes me delighted. This sense of feeling is indeed concrete evidence that writing Medium is enhancing my English ability.

Secondly, I enjoy writing Medium articles not only for myself, but for the readers. I think that one of the strengths of the Medium platform is that it shows the statistics of readers. Although there is a small number of people reading my articles, I am happy enough to have readers who enjoy reading them. Moreover, some of them give me comments about my articles either on this platform or Twitter. I am certain that these interactions between the readers are providing me with a daily pleasure to move me to work on the next project.

Thirdly, although publishing the Medium articles cannot inspire a load of people, I have a strong belief that having kept doing one thing for a certain period of time is something that cannot be done by a majority of people. Hence, I believe that continue writing the Medium articles would definitely prove my strength who has continuing power.

For this reason, I am confident that my Medium project would last until the time when writing articles in English becomes my daily habit.

What happens if we acquire a new habit?

Then, when will I judge my writing activity became a part of my habits? I reckon that it will be the time when I am desperate to open the Medium app everyday to create some stories. At that moment, I may have a higher English command level than what I have now. If I imagine myself publishing more articles with vibrant expressions, I am excited to continue my creative activities until I acquire writing activity becomes my daily habit.

Through my reflection on the Medium project, I would conclude this article by pointing out that a new habit cannot easily be established and also requires a lot of engagement. However, I would insist that it can be your habit once you enjoy doing it, or once you find some interests in it. It could be recommended to try not to pay attention to how much you could make your new behaviours as a part of your habits, but instead, it is better to explore new feelings on yourself by trying new behaviours.
