The time flies fast. It is soon the end of May and the temperature has been kept rising these days. Whenever I go out for a walk, I feel a notice of the arrival of summer but simultaneously, rain comes so frequently. This is the climate of the gloomy rainy season of Japan. Basically, this rainy season lasts for several weeks. The sky during this season is often covered with thick clouds. I suppose that many people would suffer from this gloomy atmosphere of the year; however, the only thing that I am looking forward to seeing in this dim season is hydrangeas.

Japan is one of the countries which is enriched with its nature. Starting from spring when the whole county is covered with Sakura flowers, various flowers start to bloom nationwide, such as tulips, azaleas and dogwood. Whenever I see these beautiful flowers blooming by turn on the side of the pedestrian pathways, I can feel a sense of peacefulness. At the end of May, hydrangeas will gradually show their faces and their petals are sparkling after a long rain. Although the scenery of the whole country is darker than usual days, the various colours of hydrangeas bring brightness to the cities.

Hydrangeas can be seen everywhere in Japan during this rainy season. It’s because many Japanese people grow hydrangeas in their gardens as they are easy to look after. So does my dead grandmother. She loved flowers and therefore, she was growing hydrangeas in our house garden when she was alive. This hydrangea was huge that it grew until my shoulders’ height. It seemed that this hydrangea liked the location very much as it provided a decent amount of shadow with moisturous soil. I remember that it bloomed a number of hydrangeas flowers every year.

One day, however, after several years of my grandmother’s death, the huge hydrangea disappeared from our garden suddenly. No one knows the reasons why it started to spoil but it suddenly lost its energy and disappeared from this world shortly. Perhaps, from my hypothetical assumption, this hydrangea loved not only our house garden but it liked being raised by my grandmother who loved flowers for the whole of her life.
